BOC Instructors

Our instuctors are what makes the BOC program truly unique. They are authorities in the energy field, bringing a tremendous amount of real world experience and expertise to the classroom. In a recent Midwest BOC survey, participants ranked BOC instructors as excellent. BOC instructors are an invaluable resource for BOC participants throughout the region

Why Become an instructor?

Over 100 BOC courses are held each year in the Midwest and as the number grows, MEEA is always looking for instructors who are passionate about what they do. Instructors say that teaching BOC is a great opportunity to keep your finger on the pulse of the market while sharing your knowledge with others in the field.

Instructors teach one- or two-day courses in their areas of expertise, using the BOC materials and curriculum provided to cover a wide range of topics including building systems, energy conservation, HVAC systems and controls, facility lighting, environmental health and safety regulations, indoor air quality and facility electrical systems.

Compensation

Instructors receive competitive rate of compensation and can to teach from one to six classes a year.

BOC Class Topics

Level I – Building Systems Maintenance

Level I training is designed for those individuals with two or more years of experience in building operations and maintenance, but is also an effective overall training course and resource for those new to the industry. Participants attend seven classes (74 hours of instruction, 7.4 CEUs) and demonstrate competence by completing course exams and required projects. Level II – Equipment Troubleshooting and Maintenance

Level II training is designed for those individuals who have received Level I certification or who have three or more years of experience working in operations and maintenance of a commercial or institutional facility. Level II certification requires participants to attend four core courses and two supplemental courses (56 hours of training, 5.6 CEUs) and complete class exams and projects. How to Become A BOC Instructor

If you are interested in becoming a BOC Instructor, please submit an instructor application plus any supplemental materials and references to Eric Roach at eroach@mwalliance.org or 312-784-7277. All applications are reviewed and approved by NEEC and only NEEC–approved instructors may teach the BOC program.

Minimum Requirements for BOC Instructors

Instructors must have teaching experience and technical expertise in the course topic area for which they apply. NEEC evaluates applications for both instruction and industry experience. The minimum criteria are:

• At least three years of experience as an instructor of employees in workplace settings and/or experience teaching technical topics relevant to building operations and maintenance. Five years or more is desirable.
• Evaluations of courses or trainings taught showing greater than 70% approval for clarity, organization and presentation. If evaluations are not available, applicants may receive provisional approval to teach through an interview and selection process.
• At least two years of employment in the field or industry related to the training topics. Four years or more is desirable.
• A bachelor’s degree. Work experience may be substituted for degree. One year of work experience in instruction or industry equivalent to one year of college degree work.
